After years of talking about it, dreaming about it and wondering whether we should actually do it, we’ve finally taken the plunge. Slanj Whisky is here.
Born from the same spirit as the Slanj Kilts business, which was founded over 30 years ago, Slanj Whisky is a natural extension of what we’ve always been about. Scottish heritage, a bit of fun, and a willingness to challenge tradition.
So, we decided to make our own whisky.
The Story Behind Slanj Whisky
Slanj Whisky has been a long time coming.
The idea was born between lifelong friends who had talked about creating their own Scotch whisky for what feels like forever. The name Slanj Whisky had been secured for some time, waiting for the right opportunity and, perhaps more importantly, for us to finally find the guts to launch it.
Eventually, we did.
Creating Our Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Creating a whisky isn't something you can rush.
With the help of Douglas Laing & Co, Scottish independent blenders and bottlers, we set about developing the Slanj recipe. There were plenty of different blends, plenty of tasting sessions and plenty of opinions before we eventually landed on the final liquid.
Rory McCann, an investor in the brand and a friend of the founders, also had a particular hand in helping us decide on the final recipe.
The process was collaborative from beginning to end, but ultimately there was one simple question we kept coming back to:
Would we want to pour another glass?
The answer was yes.
A Contemporary Take on Scottish Whisky
Scotch whisky is an industry built on tradition and heritage. So is the world of Scottish kilts.
We respect both enormously.
But we also believe that tradition doesn't mean everything has to stay exactly the same.
Slanj Whisky is our take on a more contemporary Scottish whisky. It's made with the heritage and craftsmanship you'd expect from Scotch, but with a more relaxed attitude to how it should be enjoyed.
It's whisky without the stuffiness.
Triple Cask Matured Scotch Whisky
Slanj is a blended malt Scotch whisky, bringing together whisky from the Speyside and Highland regions of Scotland.
The whisky undergoes a triple cask maturation, spending an extensive period of time in three different types of oak cask:
PX Sherry casks
Oloroso Sherry casks
Bourbon Oak casks
Each cask brings something different to the final whisky, helping to create the character we were looking for when developing Slanj.
The result is a whisky with a sweetly spiced and fruity character, balanced by a smooth and approachable profile.
It's easy enough to enjoy if you're new to Scotch whisky, but with enough character and depth to keep more experienced whisky drinkers interested too.
TASTING NOTES
The 1st edition of Slan imparts a sweet, spiced character, with a hint of vanilla on the nose. On the palate, the spicy sweetness manifests itself in fresh and stewed fruit, a hint of dark chocolate and cinnamon. The sweetness persists and the finish exhibits fruitcake spices and, of course, a touch of ginger.
No Rules. No Judgement.
This is probably the most important part.
We don't want to tell you how to drink your whisky.
Some people like a drop of water. Some prefer it neat. Others want a few cubes of ice.
And increasingly, whisky is finding its way into cocktails.
We're completely fine with all of it.
In fact, we actively encourage you to drink Slanj however you like. There are no rules and no judgement.
Because what's the point of making a whisky if you can't enjoy it your way?
Slanj Whisky Has Arrived
After years of talking about it, we're incredibly proud to finally introduce Slanj Whisky.
It's a blended malt Scotch whisky from Scotland's Speyside and Highland regions, triple cask matured in PX Sherry, Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon Oak casks.
But more than that, it's the beginning of something we've wanted to do for a very long time.
Slanj has always been about bringing people together, and whisky feels like a pretty natural addition to that.
